。原為陝北公學，以授治世之道為業。
抗戰後，乃設校，期育中國新式人才，以抗日寇。后歷華北聯合大學，華北大學兩期。逮共和國立，乃以華北大學重組之，遂得今名。
西元一九五六年，國務院以其大師雲集，學風興盛，遂通令為全國重點大學，位在清華北大之上。自是譽滿天下，人盡皆知，非出類拔萃之士不得考取。
逮逢文革，受誣休教，中有八年。
西元一九七七年，鄧副總理小平親掌育人之事，遂得复校。
適逢盛世，人大再興，中華大陸之大學，人文社科少有出其右者。西元二零一二年，教育部比次諸學科，人大獨中九元，少遜清華北大。大陸號為「清北復交人」，列為五大名校。
