中國共產黨中央委員會總書記，略稱「中共中央總書記」，乃中華人民共和國之執政黨中共之首也。立於民國十四年之
第四次全國代表大會，
陳獨秀當選首任總書記。獨秀之後，有向忠發、
王明、
博古、
張聞天
。
民國卅四年之中共七大以中央委員會主席代之，
毛澤東任職終身。
一九七六年九月，毛氏崩，
華國鋒繼任黨主席，止文革，民曰「英明領袖」。國鋒為固權，倡「兩個凡是」，言必遵毛旨，守毛令，民有怨。
一九七八年，
鄧小平復職，與華內鬥。鄧氏倡「實踐」以抵「凡是」。十二月，中共召十一屆三中全會，議決以鄧代華領國政。
一九八年，鄧氏權力日固，國鋒遂辭黨主席職，
胡耀邦繼任。
一九八二年中共十二大修黨章，取消黨主席，復設此位，耀邦為首任。耀邦之後，有趙紫陽、
江澤民、胡錦濤、習近平也。自澤民始，總書記兼任國家主席、
中央軍委主席也。
