中歐學者，專研奧匈故地、
波羅的諸邦、
斯拉夫列國之學也。其域西接德、法，東臨俄、烏，北瀕波羅的海，南抵阿爾卑斯山，含波蘭、
捷克、
斯洛伐克、
匈牙利、
奧地利諸邦，間或涉羅馬尼亞、
塞爾維亞之地。斯學肇端於二十世紀中葉，蓋因冷戰分野，學者欲究鐵幕之西、
蘇聯轄外諸邦政經文教之獨特脈絡。
其學以史為經，考神聖羅馬帝國之興衰、哈布斯堡王朝之治亂、兩戰風雲之變遷；以文為緯，析斯拉夫、
日耳曼、馬扎爾諸族之詩書禮樂，探哥德、巴洛克、分離派藝術之流變。復察地緣政略，如奧斯曼西擴之遺痕、普奧爭雄之舊事、
歐盟整合之新局，皆為要義。
當代所重者，尤在轉型正義。
蘇東劇變後，諸國自計畫經濟轉市貿，威權體制趨民主，其間政經震盪、認同重構，皆為顯學。今全球化浪潮下，其位漸顯。此域乃東西交沖之縮影，察其變可明歐陸大勢之趨也。
