東京人也。少敏學，及長入東京帝國大學，修政學
。時軍國氣熾，世多盲從，真男獨秉燭夜思，嘗著《日本政治思想史研究》，剖陳江戶儒學變遷，以闡發「作為」。戰後執教東大，門下才俊雲集。學貫東西，以韋伯之器解荻生徂徠之思。雖遭病厄纏身，猶砥礪深思，著《忠誠與反逆》、《原型古層》諸篇，謂日本之文明，當掙脫「古層」之桎梏，啟主體之自覺。
平成六年歿，年八十有二，學林同悲。
