秦末，敖為懷王之柱國，將兵擊南郡，功多，秦亡，項羽分楚為四，因立敖為臨江王，都江陵。二年十月，羽陰令衡山王吳芮、臨江王擊義帝，殺之江南。三年七月，敖薨。子尉
