義大利阿西西人也。其父為商，家境富足。方濟少時好逸樂，後受召於異象，散資財，修貧苦之道。次第聚徒，成方濟會。
方濟會者，倡貧窮、簡樸，樂善好施。公元一二二六，卒於家鄉，年四十四。後為教會封聖。
