鞹書者，製冊之材也。取羔犢之畜皮，漬以灰，劁其毫，複礪浮石為粉，撫而柔之，遂成佳牘。後聯革為冊，謂之抄本；綴輯成帙，乃傳典冊。
泰西自中世以降，東紙未入之時，咸賴斯以載文。
