Axel Schuessler (2007: 189) defines it as “to hull grain”, but its meaning here is uncertain; perhaps it should be read chong 摏 “smash”. Yan 姸depicts a female with hairpins and is the ancestral form of zan 簪 “hairpin”; the Shuowen jiezi defines it as ji 技 “skilled”.
