文章天下之難事，其法度雜見於百家之書，學者不遍考之，則無以知古人之淵源。予初學屬文，敏之兄為予言如此。 興定丁丑，閑居汜南，始集前人議論為一編，以便觀覽。蓋就李嗣榮、衛昌叔家前有書而錄之，故未備也。山谷與黃直方書云：「欲作楚辭，須熟讀《楚辭》，觀古人用意曲折處，然後下筆。」喻如世之巧女，文繡妙一世，誤欲織錦，必得錦機乃能成錦。因以「錦機」名之。 十一月日，河東元某自題。
