漢儒訓詁之學惟謹，而楊子雲尤為洽聞。蓋一物不知，君子所耻，博學詳說，將以反約。凡其辨名物，析度數，研精覃思，毫釐必計。下而五方之音、殊俗之語，莫不推尋其故，而旁通其義；非徒猥瑣拘泥，而為是弗憚煩也。世之學者忽近而慕遠，捨實而徇名，高談性命，過自賢聖，視訓詁諸書，往往束之高閣。盍亦思夫《周官》太平之典，其道甚大，百物不廢，雖醫卜方技，纖悉畢載；聖門學《詩》，不獨取其可興、可觀、可群、可怨，而鳥獸草木之名，亦貴多識。本末精粗，並行而不相悖。故漢儒尊經重古，純慤有守之凡，類非後人所能企及。子雲愽極群書，於小學奇字無不通，且遠採諸國，以為《方言》，誠足備《爾雅》之遺闕。平時所以用力於此深矣，世知好之者蓋鮮。前太守尚書郎李公一日語余，苦無善本。〈質〉偶得諸相識，字畫落落可觀。因以告而鋟之木，輙併附管見云。慶元庚申重午日東陽朱〈質〉書。
