蓋聞《方言》之作，出乎輶軒之使，所以巡遊萬國，采覽異言，車軌之所交，人迹之所蹈，靡不畢載，以為奏籍。周、秦之季，其業隳廢，莫有存者。曁乎揚生，沉淡其志，歷載構綴，乃就斯文。是以三五之篇著，而獨鑒之功顯。故可不出戶庭而坐照四表，不勞疇咨而物來能名。考九服之逸言，摽六代之絕語，類離詞之指韻，明乖途而同致；辨章風謠而區分，曲通萬殊而不雜；真洽見之奇書，不刊之碩記也。余少玩《雅》訓，旁味《方言》，復為之解，觸事廣之，演其未及，摘其謬漏，庶以燕石之瑜補琬琰之瑕，俾後之瞻涉者可以廣寤多聞爾。
