陝西西安府渭南人，為人豪俊，好遊俠，不事詩書，少年身陷羣盜，羣盜以其少年姣美，各以女、宗女妻之，後竟為其魁，助官勦闖，與李自成交戰，不利而走，此後不知所蹤。一說為自成所殺。
