笙者，
中國樂器也。形若鳯
翼、聲若鳯鳴
；長四尺，古時大者十九簧，小者十三簧。
簧者，笙管之中金薄鍱也。
吹笙則鼓動其簧而發聲。
「笙」是詞之記載，始於《
詩
》。
唐稱「竽」、「笙」，以至宋，皆喚之笙。
古有傳說，曰笙女媧造也
。乃至近代，有洋人約翰韋德、錢德明者，就華傳教，攜笙歸國，
歐羅巴人遂改笙，造口風琴、手風琴諸自由簧樂器。
二十世紀以降，國樂合奏愈興，乃興革以利合奏，以鍵制孔，曰閉孔發聲
。再者，國樂團吹管部高音者眾，惟少低音，故復革笙，造中音笙、次中音笙、低音笙。
笙發聲之道，謂「簧管共振」，笙師以口就吹嘴，以氣鼓簧而與笙苗氣柱共振。
簧、氣柱之頻固定，趨高偏低，乃無聲可出。今之笙者，欲長其音量而嵌金屬管於苗上，曰擴音管，使笙苗、擴音管共振，聲遂大矣。
