脈也，水出湖南東安，逕縣城而入湘，人謂東安母水
。
紫水源出舜皇山，在山北高掛嶺之洋和坪，源水名老龍江，水自西北至東南，左合龍溪，右合師公江、橫江、羊和江、源頭水、楊江諸水，逕大廟口、
紫溪市、縣城白牙市、
井頭圩，注湘於大江口
。
水長七十二公里，一說九十六公里，域廣九百八十三平方公里，落差千五百五十米餘，坡降同比十一，年均流量七億立方米，均流每秒二十三又八五立方米。水流於深山丘陵，湍急而灘多，然紫自溪市下，終年可通木船。
紫水者，古名太陽溪，或謂大陽江、
大陽川水，民傳上古舜
帝南巡，數獵於此地，故山名舜皇，獵畢而順溪入湘
。後崩於蒼梧，陵於九嶷，二妃
來奔，泣竹
留斑，淚絕血
出，入溪而染，水成絳紫，此名之由
。二妃自溺於湘，而成湘妃，乃楚人所祭者。
