紫荊關，居冀省易縣，東南徑去縣治三十公里許，道行可四十五公里。四傍皆山，北臨拒馬。古人曰：「南阻盤道之峻，北負拒馬之淵，近以浮圖為門戶，遠以宣大為藩籬。一關雄踞於中，群險庇於外，規模壯麗，屹然為畿輔保障。」位居庸、
倒馬二關間，并為「內三關」。
太行八陘中，此本蒲陰陘也。
戰國始設上谷關，以土石塞於陘上。
漢
時曰五阮關，又名子莊關。自漢之後，每多修擴，關益壯焉。
宋
時名金坡關，後以山野多紫荊，乃易今名。
