結繩者，古人之習俗也。《
易
》傳云：「上古結繩而治。後世聖人，易之以書契。」凡四海之民，未知文字者，皆以繩數物而記事。於諸敎，誦經句以數珠，可謂其遺風。
南美洲印加國嘗爲結繩之政。名其繩曰奇普
。國有結繩之官，王遣之數戸口，薄稅斂，紀曆數，行法令，以治天下。
琉球國竝
南島諸國，此俗盛如印加國。
臺灣、
滇黔、
西藏、
山丹諸蕃，亦多工之，結繩或作書簡，或作借票。如美洲先民、
非洲人之結繩者，多此類也。
