《周官》有縣正，各掌其縣政令。
春秋之世，縣邑之長曰宰、尹、公、大夫，其職同。
秦
漢，縣萬戶以上稱令，不及萬戶者稱長。
晉
宋以後，俱如漢制。
隋
縣有令有長。
唐
縣置令，有赤、畿、望、緊、上、中、下七等之差。
宋
因唐制，已改京朝官者稱知某縣。
元
縣置達魯花赤，以縣尹為副。
明
清縣置知縣，
辛亥革命後改為縣知事，後稱縣長。
