羊者，草食之畜，隸牛科羊亞科羊族
。天地之所生，草木之所養也。其毛可為衣，其乳可為食，其肉可為膳，其皮可為蓋，其角可為器
。故古以羊祭祀，以敬崇天地。羊有白、黑、黃、紫之色，有角、無角之異。
羊有山羊、
野羊二類，山羊者居高而峻，野羊者居平而遠也。羊之形態各異，而其本性一也。蓋性溫順，不與他物爭鬥，而喜群居。
羊之所居，多在山川之間，或牧於平原。羊能辨人之聲音，聞其主人之呼，則應而往。羊亦能識人之情意，見其主人之喜怒，則知所進退。是以羊為人所愛，而人亦為羊所依。
