羯，古族名，
匈奴別部。
羯本為閹羊、健羊之字，司馬貞《
史記索隱》曰：「其方人，性若羊，健捍而不均。」其源眾說紛紜：或曰匈奴別種，或曰羌
胡雜種，或曰呼揭之後，或曰小月氏之後，或曰葉尼塞語系，或曰粟特康居人。

時入居今山西省左權縣境。
十六國時，羯人石勒立
後趙，傳三世七帝三十八年。後世蓋吳、
爾朱榮、
侯景、
石敬瑭諸人，皆有稱其為羯者。
