自焚，自燒殺也，本戕身之法，杜心乞死
及明志殉道者用之。其道以火劑著身，而後引燃，或徑墮火山口中。死時痛烈，遺容陋絕，偶有得救未殞者，
肌膚敗壞，氣嗓傷毀，餘體狼藉，最自戕術之弗幸者也。人有抗志，蘊衷莫行，每奉之極途，甚有自焚籲意者，以儆群情而發後繼者也。又或有外道異端，用無明為教，殺生殘己為術，則有以自焚殉邪靈者，今萬國咸抵禁之，更立法焉，不使聲張。
