及隋開皇三年，廢郡，改州縣二元制。

及隋煬帝，改州為郡，復秦郡縣制，一曰南郡、江陵郡、江陵府、中興路。

元至正二十四年，
朱元璋改中興路，置荊州府，治江陵縣（今湖北省荊州市），屬湖廣布政司。

清沿之。康熙三年，屬湖北布政司。民國初年，全國廢府，故廢。
