天安門外西側之表

華表者，石柱也，對樹於宮門甬道側，亦名神道柱、
石望柱

華表形制，下以座承之，座式或須彌、或蓮花，座上立柱聳然，佈以雲紋，龍盤其上，柱端雲板橫焉，柱頂置盤，號曰「承露」，盤中神獸踞之。座方而盤圓，以應「天圓地方」也。其頂之神獸，其名曰「犼」，又細分，居宮門內者，其首望宮內，號曰「望君出」，意謂諫君王不可留戀後宮；居外者，望宮外，號曰「望君歸」，諫以莫戀雲遊，回朝理政者也。

考華表之傳承，久矣。上古，先民立柱以示方位，其名為桓、表，又云堯
舜時，立謗木以納諫，今之雲板是也。亦有樂器、
圭表之說，不一而足。今名於世者，
天安門前之表也，其西者毀於庚子兵火，雖巧匠補綴，創痕宛然。

日本神社必設朱門，稱曰鳥居，而識以華表。《和名類聚抄》《節用集》皆如是作。
日人有鳥居氏，字亦作華表，而訓鳥居也。
