（日文：万葉仮名、）者，古日本假名也，
音義文字也，以漢字示
日言也。
有一字一音者，蓋今日假名之范；一字多音者，蓋今日漢字入文之始；多字一音、多字少音者，或忘字添筆，或制虎焉。萬葉假名亦分訓假名、音假名，借隋唐中原漢字音者，音假名也；借日本本土詞之音，訓假名也。
釋名
萬葉者，古和歌集也。
假名者，假以名音也。
萬葉假名，蓋古之萬葉集假以書日文之漢字也。
