蔡靈侯出於虔地，滅蔡。穀梁傳以為此夷狄之滅中國也。
公羊傳左其言，謂蔡候本不義，楚王亦懷惡。皆非禮。
旋復國。遷新蔡。至楚惠王時，卒為楚所滅。蔡叔度絕祀。
