蔣廷黻，字綬章，筆名清泉，
湖南邵陽人也，

光緒二十一年生。少時甚聰慧，年十九，留學泰西，讀美國歐柏林學院。年二十四，入美哥倫比亞大學，後得哲學博士銜歸國，任南開大學教授
。
民國十八年，任清華大學教授。蔣氏尚史學，平生長於治史，
二十七年，著《中國近代史》，傳之甚廣。
三十六年，受命使美，任常駐聯合國使節。
五十一年，轉任駐美全權使節。
五十四年，以疾卒於紐約，年六十九。
