。
蒲州汾陰人也。系出河東薛氏西祖第三房。登進士科。神功元年，任中書舍人。司草詔命。聖曆二年，召為控鶴監供奉。改奉宸大夫。參修《三教珠英》。景龍二年，充修文館學士。睿宗朝，累遷中書侍郎，參知政事。改左散騎常侍。歷工部、禮部尚書。官太子少保。人號薛少保。封晉國公。開元元年，以竇懷貞事伏誅。年六十五。
稷善書，後人謂初唐四家，稷其一也。用筆纖瘦，今傳《信行禪師碑》。
宋徽宗皇帝所書瘦金體，師法稷風，兼取諸家而成。復善畫，尤專鶴。
