。時人以京極殿呼之。出藤原北家御子左流，
俊成次子，
藤原定長從兄，
西園寺公經義弟也。母五條局藤原氏。應保二年生於京都，逢平安之末季，武家日上而公卿式微，嘗欲毅然遁世，曰：紅旗征戎非我事。定家族中歌人輩出，父俊成歌風玄幽，自立流派，不拘古來萬葉集既定之法，獨樹一幟，曰幽玄名重一時。定家繼父跡，復妍其辭藻，麗其篇章，亂其舊序，新其筆墨，好倒樁，壓縮，飛躍之文法。故能領後世風騷，影響及今。自謂之曰有心。歷任參議、治部卿，官至正二位中納言，仁治二年八月二十日卒，子光家，
爲家，女因子。定家著作稱豐，傳世者眾，若新敕撰和歌集、小倉百人一首、下官集等。
平成十二年，有司以其日記《明月記》爲國寶。子孫後稱冷泉家，相續及今。
