日本三重縣上野市人，
大正四年九月二十日生。世為津藩伊賀上野城留守
。幼，隨父移鎮大連
。
昭和十三年，卒業於東京帝國大學中國哲學科，爲外務省吏，奉省命留學北京
。時中日交戰，應徵。
十六年，退役，復受命從軍為通譯。
南京城破，翌日奉命往河內
。
廿二年復員歸國，任第一高等學校教授。
廿五年，轉任東京大學文學部專任講師。
廿九年，任同助教授。
卅八年，任同教授。
四十三年，
東大紛爭起，學生與大學構難，佔據講堂。明保和學生，批大學。
四十五年政府遣警察驅學生，遂憤而辭職。爾後，屢見諸電視，爲國民所博知。
四十七年，任早稻田大學政治經濟學部客席教授
。
五十一年，爲日中學院長。
六十年二月廿六日卒，享年七十有一。一生埋首漢學，尤善小學
。傳世有《中國語音韻論》、《漢字語源辭典》、《漢字及其文化圈》等。以高島俊男承其學。
