藩鎮，原為地方方面長官之稱。
唐
時為總領一方的軍府。唐初於諸州要地置都督府，
唐睿宗時置節度大使，
唐玄宗時又於邊地置十節度使，各領數州甲兵，並掌民戶、財賦。
安史之亂後，內地悉置節度使，
河北、
河南等地逐成地方割據之勢，通稱藩鎮。
