蘇彝士運河，又稱蘇伊士運河，在西奈與
北非間，貫通紅海、
地中海，為埃及領。蓋亞
非二洲，本為一體；紅海、地中海，則為所間，舟楫不通，非繞行萬里，南越好望角，溯東非而北不可。故千載以還，屢有挖溝通航之議。

今之運河，肇於一八五九年，時法國出貲，重興土木，十載乃成。開浚以降，商旅爭用、海舶不斷，蓋水程省半之故也。

運河北為塞德港、南為陶菲克港
。蓋陶菲克港屬蘇彝士城，運河因以為名。

運河全程，不設水閘，水流自通，蓋紅海、地水海水面等高之故也。通航之初，長百又六十四公里、深八米。歷累世擴建，今長百又九十三公里、深二十四米、闊二百又五米。

運河主權，幾經易手，今屬埃及蘇彝士運河管理局
