始漢武帝微服出巡，詔隴西北西良家子擅射者「期諸殿門」，置期門，以千人為最，以期門僕射領，秩比千石。初漢武置北軍校尉，有虎賁校尉，司戰車，雖以虎賁疾行而未予置意也。

唐時避太祖虎諱，改武賁，後廢置。
