虹吸，
液流之相也。

有二皿，甲居高，乙居低，今取細管，充液
使盈， 浸其一口沒之于甲，封另口以出皿外，則以大氣所抵，管內之液不出於甲，俟置其乎乙內，管拱然若虹，方釋之，則無須泵
引，液自甲沿管而上，越其拱位，自流於乙。

原其理，
大氣壓力、
萬有引力使然也。其甲皿外管內之液柱下於甲皿液面者，大氣所承弱乎自重，遂墮而下，液稍出，其原所處遂成真空，甲皿之液為大氣壓力所驅，上而盈其空位，如是反復，涓然成流。非甲皿內管口與液面相離或二皿之液位相平而不止也。

以其無泵而吸液，所用甚廣，今之御
車而油乏者，以管取諸鄰車，即原此理也。古之九龍杯，亦此也。
