螳螂，又名蟷螂、
蟷良、
石螂、
拒斧、
天馬、
不過，昆蟲也。前肢如鐮，善捕食蟲。其類繁多，難以勝數，約二千餘。暖熱之地，皆可睹之。
其身細長，如棒，有六肢，皆亦細長，前肢如鐮。頭若三角，
複眼
。食蟲為主，而較大者，則間獵蜘蛛、
蛙之屬。若飢甚無食，則相食。雌大於雄，故雌食雄，但不必然。捕食之際，先以鎌肢挾持所獲，復以大顎噬囓之。食畢，嘗前肢以清之。
