惠公三十一年（魯莊公二十五年）薨，赤立，是為懿公。懿公好鶴，淫樂奢侈。懿公二年（魯莊公二十七年）周惠王使

齊桓公伐衛，衛及齊人戰，衛師敗績。八年（魯閔公元年）冬十二月，狄人伐衛，公好鶴，鶴有乘軒者。將戰，國人受甲者皆曰：「使鶴，鶴實有祿位，余焉能戰？君好鶴，鶴可令擊狄。」及狄人戰於熒澤，衛師敗績。公不去其旗，是以甚敗。狄於是遂入，殺懿公，遂滅衛。懿公之立也，百姓大臣皆不服。自懿公父惠公朔之讒殺太子伋代立至於懿公，常欲敗之，卒滅惠公之後而更立黔牟之弟昭伯頑之子申為君，是為戴公
