Punctuation options
衡山，五嶽之一，曰南嶽、壽嶽，始封於唐虞，山勢雄偉，綿延百里，號七十二峰，原居衡山縣境，今劃衡陽市南嶽區。一九七九年，列湘省級自然保護區。
《星經》所載，南嶽衡山是對應星宿二十八宿之軫星，軫星乃主管人間蒼生壽命。傳神農氏曾來此採百藥，因嘗線蟲中毒而仙逝於降真峰上。
道教亦傳，此山乃道教洞天福地（有三十六洞天之第三洞天——朱陵洞天，道教七十二福地之青玉壇福地、光天壇福地、洞靈源福地）也。為仙人遊憩之地。
南嶽廟，始建於唐，乃湘
最古大之一古剎。
司馬承禎、
李白、
杜甫、胡耀邦、喬石、朱鎔基等皆慕名遊歷於此。
