袁枚，字子才，號簡齋，
浙江钱塘縣人也，別號隨園老人

康熙五十五年生。枚少孤，與母鳥鳥相依，遂發憤，有異稟，年十二，補縣學，及弱冠，省叔父於廣西幕府中，
巡撫金鉷見而憐之，命成詩賦，須臾乃就，辭藻瑰麗，鉷嘉嘆之。

乾隆四年，鉷乃疏薦枚，舉博學鴻詞科，為進士，時天下凡舉二百餘，以枚最年少。歷知江南諸縣，尋調江寧，總督尹繼善識枚逸才，曰「可謂宰相必用讀書人矣！」枚奉行諸事亦盡其所能。或有以枚判事所作詩文刻行者，益顯其才。時逢其友候丞卒，枚痛懷故人而嘗患不能厚賻，乃為奔走紳士以貸金歸葬。復有相遊久者程晋芳死，枚盡焚其債。其重義若此。

枚不喜公事，既而引疾歸鄉，亡何，起陝西，復丁憂歸，乞養母曰「枚非無仕進之心，因老母七旬，家無昆季，與聖朝終養之例相符。」枚乃起小倉山房於江寧小倉山，號隨園，由是悠悠然居其中五十年，終不復出仕。
嘉慶二年卒，年八十二。

枚多著作，好美食，有《隨園食單》傳世，復喜鬼神之事，巷尾之談，乃作《子不語》二十四卷，另有小倉山房文集，
小倉山房尺牘
。特以尺牘為嘉，列清人三大尺牘。
