晉安帝隆安四年，護軍郭謙、治中索仙等推效谷令李暠為敦煌太守，稱藩於段業
。晉昌太守唐瑤推暠為大都督、將軍、涼公、領秦涼二州牧、護羌校尉，都敦煌，史稱西涼。
建初元年，遷酒泉。在位十八年，年六十四。謚武昭王。子歆嗣，在位四年，為沮渠蒙遜所滅。歆弟敦煌太守恂，為郡人宋承等所推為涼州刺史，在位二年，又為蒙遜所滅，凡三世二十四年。
