沿革
此州本無，
美國內戰起，
維吉尼亞州投南方邦聯，訖一八五九年六月廿日，州析為二。西主從聯邦，東主投邦聯。
一八六一年十月廿四，出占，割維吉尼亞西境為一州。一八六二年五月十三，州議會允其議。十二月卅一日，總統林肯署令，許置西維吉尼亞州，加廢奴之法於州憲。一八六六年，維吉尼亞眾議院以違憲故，訟西維州。又三年，最高法院允西維州之獨立。議乃歇。其州獨立雖由占出，惟時北軍在境，主南投者多為之沮。主北屬者，多在維州極北十六郡，其地少莊園，鮮奴役，內戰既起，與南人不洽。
政區
西維州五十五郡。最盛者卡諾瓦郡，州治查理斯敦所在，亦其郡治。最小者漢考克郡，其州最北郡也。
