作和歌，今傳二千三百首。於日本國勅撰集中，初收於詞花集一首，後有千載集十八首、
新古今集九十四首，至於二十一代集，共入集二百六十五首。私家集有山家集、山家心中集、閒書集等。錄其傳說逸事所謂說話集者，有撰集抄、西行物語。
令撰新古今集者後鳥羽院，其《後鳥羽院御口傳》云：「西行歌趣幽志深，世所難得。當是天才，非庸鄙志學所能為。其妙不可言。」乃與藤原俊成共開新古今集之新風者也。
