西西弗斯，
古希臘人也。其人聰明智慧，善於詭計，故能為王。然驕傲不遜，不敬諸神，多行不義，殘害百姓。故天神怒之，命死神捕之。西西弗斯知之，乃以巧言誘死神，鎖於宮中。自是人間無死，天下大亂。

天神聞之，大怒，遣戰神解死神之困，再捕西西弗斯。西西弗斯見勢不可敵，乃託其妻，言：「吾死之後，勿以禮葬我。」死神攜之冥府，西西弗斯乃訴冥王曰：「吾妻不孝，不以禮葬我，乞還人間責之。」冥王信之，許其還。西西弗斯得脫，不復歸冥府。

天神知其詭計，更怒，遣戰神再捕之。是時西西弗斯已老，無力抵抗，遂被擒。天神以其罪大惡極，刑之於冥府，令其推一大石上高山。然而每至山頂，石必墮下。西西弗斯不得已，又推石上山。如是者無窮無盡，不得解脫。此乃西西弗斯之天譴也。
