北魏孝文帝之孫，京兆王愉子也。
初封南陽王，
宇文泰既弒孝武帝，遂立之。伐東魏，關中留守兵少，所虜東魏士卒作亂，泰討破之。帝以西遷以來，禮樂散逸，命周惠達、唐瑾等損益舊章，禮樂稍備。在位十七年崩，謚文。
