北洋初，以直隸都督張錫鑾薦充大理院長，轉司法總長。累遷奉天民政長、內務、交通部總長、安徽省長、華義銀行總裁及善後會議秘書長

執政府復置責任內閣，擢世英為國務總理，
逾年求退。及國民革命成，起復，世英請入國民黨，授賑務委員會委員長。
廿五年二月，命世英以特命全權大使遣駐日本
。
抗戰作，中日邦交裂，始還，改中央救濟金保管委員會委員長。
卅四年，充國府高等顧問，
越二年授行政院蒙
藏委員會委員長，兼政務委員
。
卅九年，世英徙臺灣，旋授總統府資政。
卌九年，敕選國民大會安徽省代表。
五十三年十月十三日，卒於臺北，時年九十二，葬陽明山。
