陳郡謝氏，父萬壽子謝裒，
謝太傅第四弟也，妻王氏。萬少好名望，能施展，才器不及太傅而聲譽比肩。
及撫軍將軍司馬昱輔政，聞其名，召為從事中郎。尋遷吳興太守。
昇平二年，
桓大司馬以謝萬外鎮，時議紛紛，王右軍乃致書大司馬桓公，力陳其情，以為萬不識兵道，復不能撫眾，不可任之，兄謝安亦臨陣相勸，萬事囑之以理，乃使萬會諸將，而萬竟不能言，諸將失其所望，少頃，萬乃曰：諸將皆勁卒！卒者，行伍之列，最卑者也，諸將聞之乃怒。眾心遂失
昇平三年，伐前燕，萬臨陣懼，自脫走還，部下擒而欲殺之，終念萬為謝安弟，獲不死。歸朝，廢為庶人。
昇平五年，復召為散騎常侍，尋卒。子韶，孫思，曾孫弘徽
。有一女，尚王氏。
初，萬嘗擬八賢賦，呈之於孫綽而論之。時人謂其亦為有文才云云，復有逸事載世說新語
