物質之性也。其義與輕重有異。然古人未有質量之語，質量及重皆以輕重言之。後物理學家乃明輕重與質量之異。
質量與輕重之異
一、質量，物質之本性也。重者，物為地所引而下向之力也。
二、一物之重因其所在而異，物出大氣層外則輕，處地球之表則重。然其質量恆不變。
三、於公制，物之質量以公斤計，重則以牛頓計。
