道光二十二年八月十一日，
林則徐西安別家人，將就道戍邊，興感而作之。
後錄《雲左山房詩鈔》卷六。詩有「苟利國家生死以，豈因禍福避趨之」句，後人傳誦不絕
。

。七月十四日，則徐鎮海就道。次年五月中旬，抵西安，以疾休二月。八月十一日，
晴，則徐別家人，登途戍邊，
長子汝舟、次子聰彝、三子拱樞相隨。以有所感，口占詩二首。而後離城西趨。
