漢文帝後三年（前一六一年），老上單于卒，軍臣單于立。屢絕和親犯漢邊，

漢武帝時，使邊人誘單于於馬邑，單于以十萬騎入塞。漢將王恢、韓安國伏兵馬邑以待。雁門尉史以告，單于乃引還。自後數侵漢邊，為衛青所敗，漢遂取河南地。元朔三年（前一二六年），軍臣單于卒，弟伊稚斜攻敗太子於單而自立。
