沿革

春秋，楚王封子鄂王，于江水南岸梁子湖畔築鄂王城。公元二百二十一年，東吳吳王孫權建城于此，因「以武而昌」。隋時易郢州为鄂州，治所武漢武昌區。民國之後，江夏縣易名武昌縣。一九八三年，易名壽昌縣。次年易名鄂城縣。一九九八年，立鄂州市。
