三國吳寶鼎元年，置東陽郡治長山縣。南朝梁，置縉州，入陳改婺州。而來諸朝更迭，元至正十八年，
明太祖在兩浙，稱金華府，明、清因之。領縣八。民國元年，廢金華府。三年，改置金華道。民國十六年，廢道，諸屬縣并歸省直轄。
民國三十八年五月七日，中國人民解放軍克金華。置浙江省第八行政區，尋改金華專區。一九六八年四月，稱地區。一九八五年五月，廢區置市。今轄兩區、四市、三縣。市治婺城區。
