浙江杭州府仁和縣人也，好遊歷，久居揚州
。少年受業於何焯，與丁敬等交，乾隆元年為薦博學鴻詞科，入京未試而返。，
揚州八怪，農在其列。
博學多才，善詩、古文，精鑒別金石、書畫；工隸書，書法淳樸，楷書自創一格，具隸意，稱漆書；亦能篆刻，得秦漢法；年五十後始畫竹、梅、鞍馬、佛像、人物、山水。尤精墨梅。具造詣新奇，筆墨樸質，別開蹊蹺；所作梅花，枝多花繁，生機勃發，古雅拙樸。
作：《東萼吐華圖》、《空捍如灑圖》、《臘梅初綻圖》、《玉蝶清標圖》、《鐵軒疏花圖》、《菩薩妙相圖》、《瓊姿俟賞圖》等。著述有《冬心詩鈔》、《冬心隨筆》、《冬心畫梅題記》、《冬心畫馬記》、《冬心雜著》。
