錢穆，原名恩鑅，字賓四，江蘇無錫人也。嘗用筆名公沙、梁隱、與忘、孤雲，晚號素書老人、七房橋人，深究國史，品論得失，著作不鮮，蚤注於修身、智者之學，著有《論語新解》。

清光緒二十一年生，年七歲，入私塾。其後輟學，自學而授課于中小學。民國十九年，穆著《劉向歆父子年譜》，于學界聲名大振，為顧頡剛所薦，任燕京大學國文講師。八年居北平，先後授課於北京、清華、燕京、北師大等名校，與學術界眾名家悉相切磋。

民國三十八年以降，隻身渡港，復寓台灣以卒餘年，修史例《
國史大綱
》，付梓於臺灣商務印書館，既而還本於中原，經商務印書館印版，邊於全國。

民國七十九年，卒於臺北。
